Orthodontic Emergencies
What to do when something goes wrong with your braces or appliance
Most Issues Are Manageable at Home
True orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues, such as a loose bracket, a poking wire, or minor soreness, can be managed at home until you are able to visit our office. However, if you experience severe pain, significant swelling, or trauma to the face or mouth, seek medical attention immediately and then contact us.
Below are common orthodontic issues and how to handle them. If you are ever unsure, call our office. Our team is here to help.

Common Issues and At-Home Solutions
Loose or broken bracket: If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. Call our office to schedule a repair.
Poking wire: Use a pencil eraser to gently push the wire against the tooth. If it cannot be repositioned, cover the end with orthodontic wax or a small piece of cotton. Call us to have it trimmed.
Wire out of bracket: Try to slide the wire back into the bracket tube using tweezers. If you cannot reposition it, clip the wire with clean nail clippers behind the last bracket it is secured to, and call our office.
Soreness or discomfort: Mild soreness after adjustments is normal. Rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain medication as needed. Soreness typically resolves within a few days.
