Guiding your child's smile from an early age

Phase I Treatment

Why Early Orthodontic Treatment Matters

Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct when a child is still growing. Early orthodontic treatment, also called Phase I or interceptive treatment, addresses developing issues like crossbites, crowding, and jaw misalignment while your child's bones are still forming and responsive to guidance.

At Lefort Orthodontics, Dr. Lefort evaluates children as young as age 7 to determine whether early intervention could benefit their long-term dental health. Not every child needs Phase I treatment, and Dr. Lefort will only recommend it when there is a clear clinical advantage. When the time is right for full treatment, options include braces or Lefort Aligners.

  • First evaluation recommended by age 7
  • Guides jaw growth during critical development
  • Creates space for emerging permanent teeth
  • Can reduce the need for extractions or surgery later

The Early Treatment Process

What to expect when your child visits us

Initial Evaluation

Dr. Lefort examines your child's teeth, jaw, and bite to identify any developing concerns. Digital imaging provides a clear picture of what is happening beneath the surface.

Treatment Recommendation

If Phase I treatment is appropriate, Dr. Lefort explains the specific goals, such as correcting a crossbite or creating space for permanent teeth, and the expected timeline.

Phase I Treatment

Using appliances such as expanders, partial braces, or space maintainers, we guide your child's dental development over a period of 9 to 18 months.

Monitoring and Phase II Planning

After Phase I, we monitor your child's growth during a resting period. When the remaining permanent teeth emerge, we evaluate whether Phase II (full braces or aligners) is needed.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Guide Jaw Growth

Address upper and lower jaw discrepancies while your child is still growing, reducing the chance of surgical correction later.

Make Room for Teeth

Create space for permanent teeth to emerge in better positions, reducing crowding and the potential need for extractions.

Correct Bite Problems

Crossbites, underbites, and deep bites can be addressed earlier and more effectively during the growth phase.

Simplify Future Treatment

When Phase II is needed, it is often shorter and less complex because the groundwork was already laid during Phase I.
